Can you recycle aluminum foil?
It depends
It depends on your programme, more than for almost anything else. If yours accepts foil: make sure it is clean, then scrunch it into a ball at least two inches across. Plenty of programmes say bin it or take it to a scrap yard instead.

Why the answer isn't simple
Three different questions hide inside "is this recyclable?" — and most pages only answer one of them.

What the stuff is made of, in principle.
Aluminium is one of the best materials in the whole waste stream — it can be melted and reformed indefinitely without degrading, and doing so uses a small fraction of the energy needed to make it from ore. Foil is the same metal as a drinks can. Nothing about the material argues against recycling it.

What actually happens on the line.
Two problems, both physical. Foil arrives thin, flat and light, and anything below roughly two inches drops straight through the screens that are meant to catch containers. Scrunching it into a ball fixes this — it gives the sorting equipment an object with enough size and mass to handle. The second problem is food: baked-on grease and residue contaminate the melt and are the most common reason foil is pulled.

Local policy, which is where answers diverge.
This is one of the widest genuine splits on the site, and it is worth seeing spelled out. San Jose accepts clean foil balled to two inches. Cuyahoga County says keep it out of the curbside bin entirely and take clean foil to a scrap metal yard. Omaha says put it in the garbage, on the grounds that cooking foil is usually too contaminated and the alloy is awkward to process. All three are giving correct advice for their own facility. There is no national answer to inherit here — you have to check.

Where else it can go
Scrap metal yard
Scrap yards take clean aluminium by weight and are not fussy about piece size the way a sorting line is. Worth doing if you accumulate foil trays.
Clean only. A yard will reject greasy foil the same as a MRF would.
Reuse before recycling
Foil can be wiped down and used again several times, and a clean sheet keeps its value for recycling afterwards.
Common mistakes
- Putting small flat scraps in the bin, where they fall through the sorting screens
- Recycling foil straight off a roasting tray without washing it
- Assuming the answer is the same as for aluminium cans — cans are accepted almost everywhere, foil is not
